The results of the investigation into the tragedy in Plavnieki have been reported: murder and suicide

In February of this year, in the tragedy that occurred in Plavnieki, one boy accidentally shot another with his father's gun, an employee of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP), and then shot himself, as the LETA agency found out.

Law enforcement agencies have not yet established the exact circumstances of the boy's death. The prosecutor's office has now informed the LETA agency that a person has been charged under two articles of the Criminal Code, namely, for the illegal possession of firearms, their essential components, and ammunition, if this led to serious consequences, as well as for the possession of ammunition for firearms without the appropriate permit.

The charges were brought against the accused this week, and, as the prosecutor's office indicated, the individual had the necessary permits for both the possession of firearms and the storage of ammunition; however, cartridges intended for other types of firearms were also discovered, for which there was no permit for possession.

The accused, knowing that the issued permit for the possession of firearms defines and imposes obligations to comply with the established state safety requirements for the storage of firearms, their essential components, and ammunition, violated the norms of the Law and the Cabinet of Ministers' regulations on the handling of weapons and ammunition, according to the prosecutor's office.

During the investigation, the accused left the keys to the safe in an unspecified location in the apartment, thereby failing to ensure that other individuals could not access the safe. Thus, the keys to the safe became accessible to minors – the son of the accused and his classmate – who gained access to the ammunition and firearms stored within.

During the pre-trial investigation, it was established that the minor, carelessly and inattentively handling the firearm, shot in the direction of his classmate, after which he directed the barrel of the weapon at his own forehead and fired, resulting in the deaths of both children, the prosecutor's office reported.

As previously reported, investigators initially had no clear understanding of the actual circumstances of the incident, but during the investigation, the daily lives of the children and the circumstances of their deaths were reconstructed.

Upon completion of this investigation, a decision was made to terminate the criminal proceedings regarding the murder, as "circumstances were established that preclude criminal prosecution." In criminal procedural law, such circumstances include, for example, cases where the person being prosecuted has died.

On February 7, 2025, in Riga, in an apartment of a multi-apartment building in Plavnieki, the bodies of two boys, born in 2012, were found with gunshot wounds.
