«Internet lynching» of an Indian man in Liepaja: no crime occurred - police

The State Police refused to initiate a criminal procedural investigation into the scandalous case in Liepaja, where a father accused a kebab shop employee (a citizen of India) of attempting to get acquainted with his 11-year-old daughter.

The police received a statement from the girl's father. He also posted a photo of the kebab shop employee on social media. The employee himself categorically denied the accusations, but reportedly received multiple threats of physical violence. Due to the scandal on social media, the man was fired, after which he left Liepaja and possibly left Latvia.

Now the police have concluded that no crime occurred. As reported by 360TV Ziņas, Madara Šersņova, a representative of the Kurzeme Regional Department of the State Police, stated in a written response: "The State Police decided to refuse to initiate a criminal case, as no crime was committed. Initially, there was no confirmation of the publicly disseminated information, and after reviewing the video material and clarifying the circumstances, no evidence was found that a crime had occurred."

The police also asked the girl's father to remove the photo of the kebab shop employee from his social media to avoid manifestations of racism, but he did not do so. After this incident, the Data Protection Inspectorate reminded everyone of their right to privacy.
