A man convicted in Romania for cyber fraud, who was serving his sentence in a correctional facility in Târgu Jiu County, hacked the prison's information system and reduced the sentences for 15 inmates, reported the Romanian portal Din Politică.
The suspect was lying in the prison hospital and spied on the account details of a staff member with administrator rights. Upon returning to Târgu Jiu, he used an information kiosk with a connected keyboard and began altering information in the database, the publication reports.
In this way, the hacker reduced the sentences of the inmates and refunded money spent on purchases back to their accounts. The violations were accidentally discovered by an employee of the economic department: the amounts in the accounts did not decrease after purchases.
Law enforcement began an investigation.
