At the end of the work week, a fire engulfed a private house of one family in the Shkirotava neighborhood and quickly spread to both the first floor and the attic and roof, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3).
A woman, who suffered burns, managed to escape from the house before the rescuers arrived. She was taken to the hospital.
When firefighters arrived on Krustpils Street, the building was already burning throughout. It is presumed that the fire was noticed too late, and the flames had spread significantly, causing considerable damage.
"A one-story private house was on fire. One person who suffered burns evacuated before the arrival of the State Fire and Rescue Service (GPCS)," said Artis Strods, commander of the 8th unit of the Riga GPCS.
Neighbors reported that a family lived in the house. The woman inside during the fire received burns while trying to leave the building. Although the injuries were not severe, the victim was taken to the hospital.
"Road works became an obstacle, but the problem was quickly resolved. The hydrant was located under the asphalt," noted a GPCS representative.
Rescuers connected to the nearest hydrant, of which there are many on Krustpils Street. Apparently, the builders asphalted the old hydrant, knowing that it would be relocated after the repairs were completed. However, if this had been the only nearby hydrant, firefighting efforts could have been delayed.
Traffic in the relevant section of the road was hindered for several hours.
