The convict himself pleaded for leniency from the court.
The verdict of the 2nd Western District Military Court against Russian nuclear physicist Ruslan Shadiev has come into legal force. He was accused of treason and aiding terrorist activities (Articles 275 and 205.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
According to the publication "Kommersant," Shadiev was sentenced to 18 years in prison. He must serve the first four years in a penal colony, and the remaining 14 years in a strict regime correctional facility. The convicted person's defense intends to appeal the verdict in the military panel of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation.
The court and investigation established that in 2023, the defendant, who was then working as a first-category research engineer at the Russian Federal Nuclear Center in Sarov, Nizhny Novgorod Region, transferred 1,200 rubles (about 12 euros) from his crypto wallet to the "Russian Volunteer Corps" and the "Freedom of Russia Legion" (both organizations are recognized as terrorist and banned in Russia). Additionally, part of this amount was transferred to the project "Go to Hell" (recognized as a foreign agent in 2025), which helped individuals evade the announced partial mobilization in Russia.
The convicted person himself pleaded for leniency from the court. He claimed that he acted foolishly and did not know that the mentioned organizations were considered terrorist in the territory of the Russian Federation. According to Shadiev, he believed he was helping people in difficult life situations.
To atone for his guilt, his relatives sold their property and transferred several million rubles to support Russia's special military operation in Ukraine. However, the appellate court upheld the verdict.
In August, former Yandex employee Sergey Iryn was sentenced to 15 years in prison for treason. In February 2022, he transferred $500 to the Ukrainian fund "Come Back Alive" (recognized as an undesirable organization in Russia), which assists the armed forces of Ukraine.
