The tragedy was experienced by the owner of the Modra olas brand, farmer from the Bauska region Modris Konovalov, who reported on Instagram that all three of his dogs – Bora (4 years), Bruno (9 months), and ChipiLipi (4 months) – were shot. Modris is looking for a lawyer who is well-versed in animal protection laws, writes TV3.
Modris Konovalov reported on Instagram that all three of his dogs were shot. "I am aware that they ran away somewhere," said Modris, heading to the Bauska police station to find out why this happened.
"I need a lawyer who understands issues related to animals and the law well, because, in my opinion, first, they should call dog catchers, scan the chips, contact the owner, and only then decide what to do next. Not like calling hunters without coordinating, in my opinion, with the police, and just shooting them," Modris said, wondering why no one can explain anything to him.
"Bora, Bruno, and ChipiLipi are no longer with us. I took the dogs for examination. I cannot provide any more information at this time. Inside I am dead," he wrote.
Modris Konovalov also stated: "My world has completely collapsed today. Bora is 4 years old, Bruno is 9 months old, ChipiLipi is 4 months old. I cannot publish anything more without a lawyer's permission. I ask you to light candles for them so that their souls up there have light."
"I know – Light will win! My three little lights, may it be easy for you up there... I have experienced countless panic attacks, hysteria, and a desire to disappear... Thank you all for your support, unfortunately, I am not in a position to respond adequately to anyone. I will keep you updated, but for now, I am disappearing from social media."
"I love you all! Forgive me... Thank you to everyone who shared this story on social media! This cannot be kept silent! There are laws, and they must be followed or changed! Why do dogs need chips if they can be shot without even checking? Just shot! A four-month-old puppy ChipiLipi attacked a person? Are you serious??? My dogs loved people! Guests come to me, and many know my dogs – both personally and through the screen!"
Police Continue to Investigate the Circumstances
The portal tv3.lv contacted the State Police (SP), where it was reported that in connection with the incident in the Bauska region, where three dogs were shot, a decision was made to initiate a criminal case under Chapter 20 of the Criminal Law – on crimes against public safety and order. The police continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
The SP clarified that the municipal police initially arrived at the scene: "According to the information we have, due to an attack on a roe deer, the Bauska municipal police initiated administrative proceedings."
Animal Rescue Service Pointed Out the Reason
Earlier, the Animal Rescue Service reported on Facebook what is known: "Three dogs attacked a roe deer in someone else's yard, fought among themselves, and tore each other apart. The owners of the property tried to go out into the yard – the dogs attacked a person who, fortunately, managed to take shelter indoors. It was impossible to approach the dogs. This is a harsh lesson for dog owners – the right to life and safety belongs not only to their dogs. A wild forest animal was killed, and an attack on a person was committed.
DO NOT ALLOW YOUR DOGS TO ROAM.
If the person had not managed to escape from the dogs' teeth, the situation could have been even worse. Dogs behave completely differently when hunting in a pack. In any case, the State Police will find a common solution."
Today, the Service published another comment about the incident that occurred on October 10 in the Brunava municipality:
"We are receiving reproaches from people for the fact that the dogs were killed. The outrage is understandable, but in the name of truth, we still want to clarify the following:
The Animal Rescue Service received a call at 13:24, explaining that there were three aggressive dogs in the yard of a house in Brunava municipality. We were also sent a photo showing the dogs guarding a torn animal (its species cannot be determined, as the police cannot approach – the dogs attack). An attack was also made on the homeowners.
Immediately, we posted an announcement hoping that the owner of the dogs would come to take them. At the same time, we interviewed local residents. Unfortunately, we managed to identify the owner of the dogs almost simultaneously with the police, who were scanning the chips from the dead dogs. Only after that, at 16:10, our team arrived at the scene. Unfortunately, we were no longer awaited.
Who shot, how exactly it happened, and for what reasons – these questions must be answered by those who were at the scene. This will certainly be handled by the police.
BUT we urge you to think about two extremely serious things:
Does the life of a roe deer have the same value as the life of a dog? Or is it of lesser value? A roe deer has NO chance of escaping from a pack of dogs. This is a cruel hunt that always ends with the death of a wild animal. When dogs go "hunting," they are extremely focused on their target. And the fact that an hour ago your dog was lying on the couch and licking your hand does not mean that it cannot kill a roe deer and tear it apart with greed right now. This is called the hunting instinct, which is inherent in predators, including dogs.
When will dog owners finally start taking responsibility for their pets? Why is it not ensured that dogs CANNOT roam freely? A responsible dog owner cannot even imagine that their four-month-old puppy is roaming in the woods. Sorry, but this is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE.
If the owner of these dogs had fulfilled their duties and ensured the safety of their animals, the roe deer would have remained alive – and so would the dogs...
But, as local residents told us – here, all dogs roam on their own... And here are the consequences.
DO NOT LET YOUR DOG ROAM! NEVER!"
