The criminal case against Catholic priest Maris Zviedris for tax evasion is scheduled to continue in the Riga City Court on March 2, 2026, at 10:00, the LETA agency learned from the court.
According to the prosecutor's office, the accused, being a responsible official of the religious organization, provided false information in the reporting documents for mandatory contributions to the state social insurance (VSAOI), personal income tax (IIN), and state duty for the risk of a commercial entity for the reporting month regarding the actual number of employees engaged in the organization and their salaries.
The State Revenue Service (SRS) was not provided with data on all income of the employees of the religious organization, from which IIN and VSAOI should be calculated and paid.
Thus, the accused failed to ensure the calculation and payment of taxes in accordance with regulatory acts.
As a result, the religious organization evaded tax payments, failing to transfer personal income tax in the amount of 10,930 euros and social insurance contributions in the amount of 16,761 euros to the state budget, totaling 27,691 euros.
In another court, another case against the priest is being considered — regarding the legalization of criminally acquired financial assets. Previously, the Economic Court fully acquitted him, but the verdict has not yet entered into force.
