In the ports of Latvia, 10.553 million tons of cargo were handled in the first four months of this year, which is 13.6% less than in the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Transport.
The largest volume of cargo handled during this period in the ports was bulk cargo - 4.544 million tons (-15.3%), including grains and grain products - 1.54 million tons (-18.5%), wood chips - 919 thousand tons (-8.9%), chemical bulk cargo - 159.3 thousand tons (+11.9%), and coal - 13.3 thousand tons (37 times less).
The handling of general cargo in the first four months of the year amounted to 3.904 million tons (-12.5%), including container cargo - 1.554 million tons (-7.9%), timber - 1.158 million tons (-29.8%), and ro-ro cargo - 1.088 million tons (+2.9%).
Liquid cargo handled in the ports of Latvia in the first four months of this year totaled 2.104 million tons (-11.7%). The majority of the liquid cargo consisted of petroleum products - 1.823 million tons (-14.7%).
The leader in cargo turnover for the first four months of the year remained the Port of Riga - 5.356 million tons (-5.5%). This was followed by the Port of Ventspils, with a cargo turnover of 2.507 million tons (-24.1%), and the Port of Liepaja in third place with a turnover of 1.968 million tons (-13.7%).
Among the small ports of Latvia, the highest cargo turnover in the first four months of this year was at the Skulte Port - 360 thousand tons (-18.8%). This was followed by the Mersrags Port - 195.4 thousand tons of cargo (-33.5%) and the Salacgriva Port - 136.7 thousand tons (-33.1%).
In total, small ports in Latvia handled 722 thousand tons of cargo in the first four months of 2026 (-25%).
As reported, the cargo turnover of the ports of Latvia last year amounted to 34.281 million tons, which is 4.8% less than in 2024.
