Candidates are allegedly rejected due to "too high a skill level."
90% of Russian women over 45 years old face rejections when seeking employment — potential employers "filter out" candidates due to their age. We discuss what is currently happening with ageism in the labor market:
As HR expert Garry Muradyan told "Baza", women who took long breaks for raising children — for example, for 10 years or more — have it particularly hard. Employers fear that such candidates have lost professional skills and will not be able to quickly adapt to the changed labor market. However, they do not directly state this — due to the legal prohibition on age discrimination.
However, experienced female employees who have not taken any breaks also face problems. In a conversation with "Baza", 47-year-old Natalia from the Moscow region complained that she has been unable to find a job for three years and is forced to make ends meet with rare project-based work. They do not directly mention her age, but according to her, this issue is read "between the lines" — even at the vacancy stage, where phrases about a "young friendly team" are frequently encountered. Natalia is convinced that her resume is often not even opened. And if it does come to an interview, she is rejected allegedly due to her skill level being too high.
Natalia's acquaintances have faced a similar situation: despite their professionalism in their fields, they are forced to consider any positions and still receive rejections. As a result, women over 45 find themselves in a trap: for some vacancies, they are too old, for others — too experienced.
HR expert Garry Muradyan notes that in general, up to 45% of applicants over 55 years old receive rejections related specifically to age. They are often offered heavy physical labor or low-paying jobs.
58-year-old Marina from Belgorod took a 12-year career break to raise her children and is now unsuccessfully trying to find a job. Even for a sales position, she was initially accepted for an internship, but after three days, she was asked not to return: the woman faced difficulties with modern cash management systems. However, she was accepted without problems at a poultry factory, but the job turned out to be physically exhausting and low-paying. For vacancies without heavy labor, Marina is not hired — they cite "lack of experience" and the phrase "not suitable."
