Global wine consumption in 2025 has fallen to its lowest level since 1957. This is stated in the annual statistical report of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV).

According to Reuters, last year, the world consumed only 208 million hectoliters of wine, which is 2.7% lower than the figures for 2024 and 14% below the levels of 2018.

Analysts attribute this decline to a combination of factors: significant price increases due to inflation and changing preferences among the younger generation, which is increasingly rejecting alcohol.

The sharpest decrease in demand was recorded in China, where consumption fell by 13%. Significant declines were also observed in the Netherlands (-12.7%), Spain (-5.2%), and the United States (-4.3%).

Despite the negative trend, the United States remains the largest wine market in the world, with a projected consumption volume of 31.9 million hectoliters. At the same time, some countries showed growth: in Brazil, demand increased by 41.9%, and notable rises were also recorded in Romania (+11%) and Japan (+6.8%).

Alongside the decrease in demand, the OIV reports a reduction in vineyard area. Over the past 25 years, about 10% of wine-growing land has disappeared worldwide. By the end of 2025, the total area shrank by another 0.8%, totaling 7 million hectares.

In the European Union, this process is occurring more rapidly: in France, vineyard areas decreased by 4.4% in one year. Currently, the largest holders of vineyards remain Spain (915,000 ha), France (740,000 ha), China (733,000 ha), and Italy (726,000 ha).

Additionally, experts note that global wine export volumes have fallen to their lowest level in the past 15 years. The industry is entering a period of long-term transformation, requiring producers to adapt to the new realities of the global market.
