The Global Food Industry Loses Billions Due to Obesity Drugs

Global food and beverage companies are focusing on reducing ingredient lists and smaller package sizes in 2026 due to the popularity of appetite-suppressing obesity drugs. This was reported by Reuters.

According to estimates by EY-Parthenon cited by Reuters, changes in diet associated with the consumption of GLP-1 drugs could mean a loss of up to $12 billion in snack sales over the next decade.

Data analysis from Numerator, conducted by PwC, shows that people using GLP-1 drugs consume, on average, 40% fewer calories. Dessert consumption has decreased by 84%, and alcohol consumption by 33%, while fresh produce consumption has increased by more than 70%.

Peter ter Kulve, CEO of Magnum Ice Cream, noted that people taking such drugs continue to enjoy treats, but their "mindless overeating" sharply decreases.

This has prompted food and beverage manufacturers to implement changes. PepsiCo launched a Simply NKD product line to reformulate its Lay's and Gatorade snacks by removing artificial colors and flavors, as well as reducing portion sizes.

Coca-Cola increased production at the end of 2025 to meet the growing demand for its high-protein Fairlife milk. American manufacturer General Mills released high-protein Cheerios cereal in December 2024, competing in the breakfast market.
