Retail trade growth in Latvia in October was higher than the EU and euro area average

Retail turnover in Latvia in October of this year increased by 4.9% compared to the same month last year, which is higher than the average in the European Union (EU) and the euro area, according to data published on Thursday by Eurostat for 23 countries in the bloc.

Even more than in Latvia, growth was observed in Cyprus (+9.9%), Bulgaria (+7.4%), and Malta (+6.2%). Retail turnover increased by 3.9% in Lithuania and by 4% in Estonia.

During the same period, a decline was recorded in Luxembourg (-0.8%), Austria (-0.6%), and Belgium (-0.1%).

In EU countries for which data is available, retail trade in October compared to last year grew by 1.6%, and in the euro area by 1.5%.

Compared to the previous month, retail trade in October remained unchanged in both the EU and the euro area.

The largest monthly growth was recorded in Luxembourg (+3.6%), Estonia (+1.7%), Croatia (+1.4%), and Latvia (+1.1%), while the sharpest decline was in Belgium (-1.3%), Austria (-0.6%), Ireland and Sweden (both -0.4%), while in Spain and the Netherlands, retail trade remained unchanged. In Lithuania, retail trade increased by 0.3%.

Data for Greece, Italy, Romania, and the Czech Republic is unavailable.
