England has recorded its first successful court case in which a significant portion of the legal work was performed by an AI lawyer, reports The Guardian.
This concerns the case of HR consultant Tamires Kamal Takvidir, who approached the company Garfield AI to recover a debt of £7,000. She paid about £400 for the service's fees.
The AI prepared the claim, initiated the legal proceedings, and organized the necessary materials before the trial began. In particular, four witness statements and a set of documents for the court were prepared.
The hearing took place on May 14 at the Wandsworth County Court and lasted about three hours. Despite a counterclaim from the defendant, who was represented by lawyers, the court sided with Takvidir and ordered the debt to be paid.
In court, the woman was represented by lawyer Dominic Lee. He noted that the documents prepared by the AI were drafted clearly and efficiently but emphasized that court appearances remain a task for humans.
Co-founder of Garfield AI Philip Young called this case a landmark event for the justice system.
