On Sunday, June 21, at 11:24 Latvian time, the summer solstice will occur. This day will be the longest of the year, while the night from Saturday to Sunday will be the shortest, according to data from the portal timeanddate.com.
Since the moment of the solstice falls in the first half of the day, the shortest night is the one preceding it.
In Riga, its duration will be six hours and eight minutes. In different regions of the country, the night will last from five hours and 48 minutes in the northeast of Latvia to six hours and 28 minutes in the south of the country.
The earliest sunrise is expected in the Pededze parish of the Alūksne municipality at 4:10. The latest sunrise will be on the southwestern coast of the South Kurzeme municipality at 4:48. In Riga, the sun will rise at 4:29.
After the solstice, the daylight will begin to gradually shorten. By June 23, it will be shorter by five seconds, and in a week, it will decrease by about five minutes. After a month, the duration of the day will shorten by about an hour.
From an astronomical point of view, the solstice marks the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. However, if we consider the amount of sunlight throughout the year, this day is regarded as the midpoint of the brightest part of the year. Astronomical summer will last until September 22.
