In the Japanese city of Utsunomiya, authorities have taken unprecedented safety measures after a bear was spotted within the city limits. While the predator has not yet been captured, classes in all elementary and middle schools have been canceled.

In the Japanese city of Utsunomiya, located north of Tokyo, all 94 elementary and middle schools were closed today after a bear was spotted in the city, reports NOS.

The animal was first seen on Saturday in one of the city's parks. Despite efforts by specialists, capturing the bear has not yet been successful. On Monday morning, it was spotted again near one of the middle schools, prompting authorities to take additional precautions.

Bears Are Approaching Humans More Often

In recent years, there have been significantly more instances of bears appearing in populated areas and attacking people in Japan.

Last week, in Fukushima Prefecture, at least four people were injured in a bear attack. Surveillance cameras captured footage of a black bear chasing a company employee and then knocking him to the ground near the entrance of a factory.

Although the Asian black bear is considered a vulnerable species, its population in Japan has noticeably increased. Experts estimate that since 2012, the population of these animals has tripled. One reason cited is the reduction in bear hunting.

Climate Impact

Experts also link the increased encounters between humans and bears to climate change.

Due to the reduction of their usual food sources in forests, animals are increasingly forced to search for food near populated areas. As a result, bears are appearing more frequently in cities and suburbs, raising the risk of dangerous encounters with people.

The situation in Utsunomiya illustrates how serious the problem of coexistence between humans and wild animals is becoming in Japan. While specialists continue the search for the bear, authorities are implementing additional safety measures to prevent possible attacks and protect the city's residents.
