U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that modern Cuba poses a threat to the national security of the United States. In Havana, such statements were interpreted as an attempt to justify pressure on the island and accused Washington of provocative policies.
The head of American diplomacy made harsh accusations against Cuba. Speaking on June 2 at a hearing in the House Appropriations Committee, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that under the current leadership, Cuba poses a real threat to the national security of the United States. A video of his speech was published on the DWS News YouTube channel.
In response to a direct question from congressmen, Rubio confirmed that the U.S. administration views Cuba as a source of potential threat. According to him, the Cuban state is essentially failing and needs deep systemic reforms.
The Secretary of State emphasized that serious internal reforms are necessary to eliminate existing risks. However, in his opinion, the current leadership of the island is incapable of implementing such changes.
Rubio: Cuba Remains a Threat to U.S. Security
Washington's sharp statements have provoked a negative reaction in Havana. On May 22, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla accused Marco Rubio of deliberately escalating tensions around the republic.
According to the head of Cuban diplomacy, the rhetoric of the American Secretary of State is aimed at creating conditions for further pressure on the island and can be seen as an attempt to provoke aggressive actions against Cuba.
Relations between the U.S. and Cuba have remained tense for decades; however, in recent years, mutual accusations have become more frequent against the backdrop of political disagreements and ongoing American sanctions.
Marco Rubio's new statements indicate the continuation of Washington's tough stance towards Cuba, writes bb.lv. Meanwhile, Cuban authorities continue to reject U.S. accusations, making the prospects for improving relations between the two countries unlikely in the near future.
