U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he will personally open the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States after several well-known musicians declined to participate in the Freedom 250 festive concert in Washington.
The scandal surrounding the event erupted after several popular performers canceled their appearances at the concert, which is set to be one of the central events of the country's anniversary celebration. Among those who declined to participate were Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, Young MC, Morris Day and The Time, as well as the group C+C Music Factory.
In response to the situation, Trump issued a sharp criticism of the artists, stating that the organizers should have held a large patriotic rally instead of inviting musicians who, in his opinion, do not enjoy widespread public support. The president emphasized that he prefers to see successful people beside him who share his views.
After some performers declined, a decision was made to change the format of the celebration's opening. Now, the main event of the ceremony will be a speech by Donald Trump himself, who will address the participants of the festivities on June 24 with a keynote speech.
The organizers of Freedom 250 supported the president's initiative. According to organizing committee representative Daniel Alvarez, the participation of the head of state will underscore the historical significance of the anniversary and give the event a special status.
In his statements, Trump also reiterated his criticism of the federal court's decision, which previously ruled to remove his name from the title of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The president called this decision unfair and stated that he no longer intends to participate in the activities of the institution.
The festive events dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the United States will take place from June 25 to July 10, 2026. Millions of Americans and visitors to the country are expected to participate. Organizers hope that the anniversary will become one of the largest public events in modern U.S. history.
