As a result of the explosion in a building in northeastern Myanmar, more than 45 people have died, including six children.

Local media report this. According to preliminary data, explosives used in the mining industry were stored in the building, reports NOS.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) cites a source stating at least 55 dead — 25 women and 30 men. Reuters notes that it has not yet been able to independently confirm this information.

In a published video, several buildings can be seen completely destroyed. According to the Associated Press, more than a hundred structures have been damaged. Eyewitnesses also report 74 injured individuals who were taken to hospitals.

The explosion occurred near the border with China

The tragedy occurred around noon in the village of Kaungtup, located in an area known for silica mining — a mineral widely used in the production of glass, ceramics, and concrete.

The settlement is approximately three kilometers from the Chinese border and is controlled by the armed ethnic group Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which is fighting against the Myanmar government.

According to several media outlets, TNLA representatives stated that gelignite — a powerful explosive widely used in mines and quarries — was stored in the building.

The causes of the incident are being investigated

Chinese state television reported that smoke columns from the explosion were visible even in China.

Currently, specialists continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident. The cause of the detonation of the explosives has not yet been officially established.
