How to Properly Store Bananas to Prevent Browning

This useful fruit often spoils before we decide to eat it.

Bananas are nutritious and energy-rich foods. They can be consumed not only fresh but also added to smoothies, cereals, and other dishes. However, these fruits have one significant drawback—they spoil quickly at home, turn brown, become soft, and lose their flavor. So what’s the issue?

It is important to follow the storage rules for bananas. It is recommended to keep them away from direct sunlight, extreme cold, and temperature fluctuations, as this negatively affects the condition of the fruits.

If you want to keep bananas fresh for a long time, it is better to buy underripe fruits. They will ripen at home and will not spoil. The optimal temperature for storing bananas is between 13 and 17 degrees.

Most often, such conditions can be created by keeping bananas on the balcony, in the cellar, or in a cool place in the apartment, but not in the refrigerator. In too cold a place, these products turn brown and spoil faster. Experts recommend wrapping bananas in a paper bag or parchment paper to preserve their original appearance.

If you have peeled a banana but do not want to eat it, you do not have to throw it away. You can preserve it by placing it in an airtight container and freezing it. In this form, it can be stored for several months and used in smoothies, baking, or cereals.

Another way to store peeled bananas is soaking. Place the bananas in water with vinegar (in a ratio of 1 to 4) for a few minutes, then put them in a container in the refrigerator. In this form, bananas will last for 3-4 days.

If you need to keep the fruit fresh overnight, you can leave it on a plate, having previously sprinkled it with lemon juice.

Important: do not soak, freeze, or spray a banana with its peel on. After peeling, it can become shapeless and tasteless.
