A shooting occurred near the Islamic center in San Diego, resulting in the deaths of three people. Two suspected attackers were later found dead in a vehicle near the scene.
In San Diego, California, a shooting occurred near the Islamic center complex, becoming one of the most high-profile tragedies in recent days in the U.S.
According to police, three people were killed.
Two others — the suspected shooters aged 17 and 19 — were later found dead from gunshot wounds, which investigators believe they inflicted upon themselves.
The incident took place near the Islamic Center of San Diego — the largest mosque in the county. Following the initial reports of the shooting, authorities urged residents of nearby areas to stay indoors. Later, police stated that the threat was "neutralized."
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl reported that law enforcement arrived at the scene about four minutes after the call.
"Officers immediately found three deceased individuals in front of the Islamic center," he told reporters.
Later, a vehicle was found near the scene, inside which were both suspected shooters. Police emphasized that law enforcement did not use their weapons.
Among the deceased was a security guard of the Islamic center. The identities of the other two victims have not yet been officially disclosed. Investigators continue to determine the motives behind the attack.
At this time, authorities have not stated whether the incident is being considered a hate crime or a terrorist act. However, the very fact of the attack near the mosque has already sparked widespread public outcry in the U.S.
U.S. President Donald Trump called the incident a "terrible situation."
Mass shootings and armed attacks remain one of the most painful topics for American society.
Moreover, attacks near religious sites traditionally provoke particularly strong reactions due to the risk of increasing inter-religious tensions.
The investigation is ongoing.
