At the negotiations on the European Union (EU) multiannual budget for 2028-2034, Latvia will emphasize the need for additional funding due to the consequences for it as a country on the eastern border of the EU of Russian aggression against Ukraine, according to an information report prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), which was reviewed by the government today.

The report is dedicated to the topics that will be discussed at the EU Council meeting on General Affairs on May 26. The agenda for the upcoming meeting includes issues regarding the EU's multiannual budget for 2028-2034, the European Council meeting on June 18-19, EU-UK relations, as well as the annual dialogue on the rule of law.

At the negotiations on the EU's multiannual budget, Latvia will also emphasize the need for additional funding under the Common Agricultural Policy and will advocate for a distribution that ensures the equalization of direct payments.

Latvia also believes that it is necessary to maintain the funding proposed by the European Commission for the Connecting Europe Facility, including in the areas of transport and military mobility.

Latvia will be represented at the upcoming EU Council meeting on General Affairs by the parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Artem Urshulsky.
