The U.S. and Iran 'possibly' will be able to end the conflict soon, Donald Trump stated at a press conference at the White House.
The United States held 'very good' negotiations with Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump said at a press conference at the White House on Wednesday, May 6, as reported by DW. According to him, the parties 'possibly' will be able to reach a deal soon and end the conflict. 'Things are going well for us right now, and we should get what we need to get. If we don’t, we will have to take a big step further. But they want to make a deal,' Trump stated.
He noted that Tehran agreed to Washington's main demand - to abandon the development of nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Iranian authorities have not yet commented on the U.S. president's statement.
Axios: The U.S. is Close to an Agreement with Iran
Earlier, Axios reported, citing sources in the White House, that Iran and the U.S. are close to signing a 'one-page memorandum of understanding' that will serve as a peace agreement between the parties and create a basis for further negotiations.
In particular, the document provides for 30 days of negotiations during which the parties should reach additional agreements regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's nuclear program, and U.S. sanctions. The White House expects Iran to sign the memorandum by the end of the current week, Axios reported.
Iranian authorities previously stated that they are studying the U.S. proposal to end the war and will soon convey their response through Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator in the negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
