Berlin police plan to reintroduce restrictions on the display of Soviet and Russian symbols on May 8–9. According to Berliner Morgenpost, the bans will apply at key military memorials in the city.
"Flags and banners of the former Soviet Union, Belarus, and the Chechen Republic must be banned... In addition, the ban includes wearing military uniforms or parts of them, wearing military insignia, 'displaying symbols 'V' or 'Z' either separately or prominently,' as well as displaying ... St. George ribbons," the material states.
A police representative told the newspaper that the bans will apply to memorials in Tiergarten, Treptower Park, and Schöneholzer Heide Park. The relevant orders will be published in the coming days. It is reported that in preparing the bans, the police relied on restrictions from previous years.
The restrictions repeat practices from previous years and are aimed at preventing possible conflicts on commemorative dates. At the same time, separate exceptions are provided for diplomats and World War II veterans.
