Europe is experiencing a heatwave. France has recorded the highest temperature ever recorded in June. The country has victims of the unprecedented summer heat.

In France, meteorologists have recorded a record heat for the month of June. As reported on Tuesday, June 23, by the AFP agency, citing the national meteorological service France-Météo, the average air temperature across the country, calculated based on daytime and nighttime readings, reached 29.2 degrees early in the morning on June 22.

"This is a record for the month of June. The figure exceeded the previous maximum recorded on June 30, 2025," journalists quote a representative of France-Météo.

Last week, France was hit by extreme heat. On June 22, a red alert warning of overheating danger was in effect for more than half of the country's territory. In many regions, temperatures exceeded 40 degrees. Local temperature records were set in Rennes, Bordeaux, and Angers.

Victims of Extreme Heat

In the town of Carpentras, located in southeastern France, two children aged two and four were found dead in their parents' car on June 22. Investigators link their tragic death to overheating. Over the weekend of June 20 and 21, three fatalities related to the unprecedented summer heat were recorded in France. Additionally, reports have emerged of more than a dozen cases of drowning in bodies of water.

In Germany, five people drowned over the weekend of June 20 and 21, AFP reports.

On June 22, more than 1,350 schools in France canceled classes. Over 4,000 schools shortened lessons, allowing students to go home around noon. Many schools in Germany took similar actions.

Train Cancellations and Authorities' Call to Stay Indoors

The heat has also spread to other European countries. In Belgium, as in France, some trains were canceled during peak hours due to extremely high temperatures "to avoid technical failures and accidents." The Royal Meteorological Institute expects another temperature record to be set in Belgium over the upcoming weekend.

In the Netherlands, meteorologists forecast temperatures to rise to 37 degrees by the end of the week. In the UK, the meteorological service announced that on June 24 and 25, a red overheating danger level would be in effect in the central and southern regions of England. It is predicted that "unusually hot and muggy weather" will prevail in London, Birmingham, Bath, and other cities, with maximum temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees.

Temperatures at the 40-degree mark are also expected in the southwest of Germany, in Baden-Württemberg, over the next two to three days. In Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate, and North Rhine-Westphalia, the thermometer will also approach this mark, although it will not reach it.

In Spain, the Aemet meteorological service also warned of "extremely high" temperatures both during the day and at night, lasting until June 24. Authorities urged the population to keep windows closed and refrain from using heat-generating household appliances.
