The U.S. Reduces Troops in Germany but Remains a Key Ally

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the planned reduction of the American contingent is not related to disagreements with Donald Trump. According to him, the U.S. remains a key partner for Germany and NATO.

The planned withdrawal of part of the U.S. military contingent from Germany, as stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, is not related to his disagreements with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Iran.

"This concerns the contingent of American soldiers in Europe, which (former U.S. President - IF) Joe Biden has stationed here on a temporary basis. (...) Discussions about their withdrawal have been ongoing for a long time," Merz said in an interview with the German television channel ARD.

Merz also emphasized that the U.S. remains a key partner for both Germany and NATO, and although he and Trump have "different views on this war," they share a common opinion regarding Iran.

"We have a common goal, and that goal must be as follows: we cannot allow Iran to acquire a nuclear bomb. And that is what we are striving for together," the Chancellor stated.

Merz's comments echo those of German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who called the statement about the reduction of American forces in Germany "predictable" in an interview with ARD on Saturday.

Earlier, the Pentagon announced that the U.S. would withdraw 5,000 American servicemen from Germany within the next 6-12 months.

However, more than 30,000 soldiers will remain in Germany, making it the second country in the world by the number of American servicemen stationed there, after Japan.

Despite the withdrawal of some troops, strategic cooperation between Washington and Berlin remains intact, writes bb.lv. Germany continues to be one of the main centers of American military presence in Europe, and the NATO alliance continues to play a crucial role in security matters.
