Warnings are being voiced in the Israeli expert community about the inadmissibility of underestimating the scale of Egypt's military exercises near the border with Israel. Such actions cannot be viewed as routine maneuvers without strategic significance, stated Orientalist Dr. Edi Cohen.
According to him, not only the fact of conducting exercises deserves special attention, but also how they are presented within Egypt. In recent days, Egyptian media have been actively covering the events, accompanying reports with rhetoric that, in the expert's assessment, is demonstrative in nature. Phrases about the end of the 'calm border' period are being voiced in the public space, which, in his opinion, goes beyond the usual informational support for military training.
In the past, Israel has faced situations where military exercises were interpreted as a formality and did not elicit an appropriate response. In this context, the expert recalled the events leading up to the Yom Kippur War, when maneuvers were also perceived as standard activity, as well as the period before the attack on October 7, when similar signals were not assessed as a potential threat.
The geography of the exercises also raises certain questions. According to the expert, conducting maneuvers in close proximity to the Israeli border requires more careful analysis. He questioned why such large-scale actions are concentrated in a specific area, despite the significant territory of Egypt where such exercises could take place without additional political resonance.
Furthermore, Cohen noted the informational aspects of what is happening. He stated that during the exercises, instances of communication restrictions are recorded, which may also indicate a more complex scenario than standard training. The expert emphasized that such elements require assessment at the level of political and military leadership.
In his analysis, Edi Cohen also touched upon the international context. He reminded that Egypt remains one of the largest recipients of American financial and military aid. This factor can be seen as a tool of influence that Israel is capable of using in dialogue with the United States.
Cohen believes that Israeli leadership should establish a clearer position regarding Cairo through Washington, linking the continuation of support for Egypt with specific commitments and transparency in security actions.
