U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that the U.S. is considering reducing its military personnel in Germany, LETA reports citing AFP/DPA.
"The U.S. is studying and considering the possible reduction of its military presence in Germany with the intention of doing so in the near future," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
On Tuesday, Trump criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for his criticism of the U.S. strike on Iran.
Merz "doesn't know what he's talking about," Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday. It's no surprise that "Germany is doing so poorly both economically and in other areas!" he added.
Merz stated on Wednesday in Berlin that his relationship with Trump "remains - at least in my opinion - as good as ever." "We still have constructive discussions with each other," Merz said.
For many years, there have been dozens of major U.S. military bases in Europe. In Germany, among them are the U.S. European Command (EUCOM) in Stuttgart and Ramstein Air Base in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Last year, about 80,000 American troops were stationed in Europe.
