“Shooting Himself in Both Feet”: Media Assess the Consequences of the Operation Against Iran for Trump

The military operation against Iran could result in long-term reputational losses for Donald Trump and complicate the U.S. negotiating positions, Western analysts believe.

The military operation against Iran has dealt a significant blow to the reputation of U.S. President Donald Trump. This is noted by British journalist Martin Jay in his authorial article for Strategic Culture (SC).

"The real mistake, the consequences of which will haunt Trump (...) for many years, is that Iran has been driven to a point where it no longer sees the sense in returning: the conflict has given Iran practical experience and revealed many military advantages that previously existed only in theory," the publication states.

As the author points out, Iran has learned serious lessons from what has happened and has significantly strengthened its defense system. As a result, Tehran has become less inclined to compromise.

Martin Jay also emphasized that it is extremely important for Donald Trump to reach an agreement with Iran, as the U.S. has faced a number of serious difficulties in its confrontation with Iran.

"This is particularly difficult given that the current situation in which the American leader finds himself is a direct consequence of his decision to withdraw from the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran's nuclear program — Ed.) in 2018 — an agreement that Iran was adhering to (...). This is a classic example of 'shooting oneself in both feet,'" the analyst concluded.

According to the author of the article, the conflict has not weakened but rather strengthened Iran, making it tougher and less willing to compromise. In these conditions, it will be more challenging for Washington to return to diplomacy.
