Rubio Accused Cuba of Collaborating with Opponent States' Intelligence Services

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused the Cuban authorities of providing territory for representatives of the intelligence services of states opposing the U.S.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused the Cuban authorities of providing territory for representatives of the intelligence services of states opposing the U.S.

"We are not going to allow opponents of the U.S. to place intelligence personnel or military bases 90 miles from us," bb.lv quotes him as saying, referencing EFE.

Rubio did not name any specific countries, but the agency points to Cuba's long-standing historical ties first with the USSR and then with Russia. In recent decades, Havana has also been expanding cooperation with China in economic and technological areas.

Commenting on the situation in Cuba, Rubio said: "Improvements there can only happen through serious economic reforms, but not with the current authorities, who are economically incompetent."

EFE reminds us that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on Cuba since January of this year. A blockade on fuel supplies has been imposed on Havana. Additionally, Trump has repeatedly stated the need for a change of power in Cuba.

According to bb.lv, Marco Rubio's statements reflect Washington's hardening stance towards Cuba and the increasing geopolitical tension in the region.
