On the Brink of a Nuclear Abyss: IAEA Chief Sounds the Alarm

Rafael Grossi, the head of the IAEA, warns: the nuclear threat has reached an unprecedented level since the Cold War, requiring urgent measures.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, speaking on his social media page on X, made a shocking statement. He emphasized that the threat of a nuclear catastrophe has reached a peak comparable to the most tense moments of the Cold War.

According to Grossi, it is extremely important to preserve and strengthen the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). The modern nuclear landscape, as he noted, has become significantly more unstable and unpredictable.

The Threat is Growing

There are more participants, the risks have increased, and clarity has catastrophically diminished. The IAEA chief is convinced that preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons serves the common interests of all humanity.

The NPT remains the most powerful and effective multilateral tool for addressing this complex challenge. "War has returned to Europe and the Middle East, and the multilateral mechanisms that underpin peace and security are under enormous pressure," stated Rafael Grossi.

He also emphasized the key role of the safeguards regime. This mechanism is designed to prevent the diversion of nuclear materials from peaceful use to military purposes, ensuring global security.

NPT: The Foundation of Security

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which entered into force in 1970, is the cornerstone of international security. To date, it has 191 state parties.

Among them are five nuclear powers: the USA, China, France, Russia, and the UK. Their commitment to the treaty is critically important for maintaining stability in the world.
