Convicted mass murderer Anders Breivik has officially changed his details, choosing the name Jan Johansen – one of the most popular combinations in Norway. This is not the first name change for the notorious criminal.
Terrorist Anders Breivik has officially changed his name again; he is now known as Jan Johansen. This combination of first and last name is the most common in Norway, as confirmed by the national registry.
The publication Aftenposten, citing "European Truth," reported on this change. According to the Norwegian Statistical Office, by the end of 2025, 599 citizens bore the name Jan Johansen.
This is not the first time Breivik has changed his personal details. He was previously registered under the names Far Skaldigrimm Rauskjold af Northrick, and before that – Fjotolf Hansen.
His lawyer Øystein Storrvik declined to comment on both the change itself and the motives that prompted his client to choose a new name.
History of Crimes and Conditions of Detention
Anders Breivik has forever entered history as the organizer and perpetrator of one of the most horrific terrorist attacks in Europe. On July 22, 2011, he coldly killed 77 people during attacks on the island of Utøya and in Oslo.
In August 2012, the court sentenced him to the maximum possible punishment in Norway – at least 21 years of imprisonment. Since then, he has been held in strict isolation.
Last year, the Borgarting Court of Appeal, one of the six appellate courts in Norway, rejected the lawsuit of terrorist Breivik. He complained about the alleged violation of his rights due to the conditions of his imprisonment.
After Breivik's initial complaints about his detention conditions, changes were made in his cell: budgerigars were replaced with guinea pigs, and the walls were decorated with paintings of natural landscapes.
