Mali Under Attack: Jihadists and Tuareg Rebels Strike

Since April 25, Mali has been engulfed in a wave of attacks from jihadists and Tuareg rebels.

Since April 25, Mali has faced continuous attacks from the jihadist group JNIM and Tuareg rebels. These alliances are targeting government troops and major cities in the country.

The press service of the Malian government reported a massive assault that occurred on Saturday. Kidal, Gao, Sevare, Kati, and even the capital Bamako were attacked simultaneously. Although fighting in Bamako had not been confirmed by April 27, a curfew is in effect from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, which was imposed on April 24.

On April 25, the day the insurgent offensive began, the country lost Defense Minister General Sadio Kamara. His tragic death was confirmed by the government press service on the night of April 27. General Kamara fell victim to a rebel attack, which was intensified by a suicide bomber in a car bomb targeting his residence.

The General Staff of the Malian Army reported that fierce fighting continued on April 27 in Kidal, Kati, and other localities. The Malian military is actively conducting a "counter-offensive," as stated in a FAM post on Facebook.

Kati is home to a major FAM base and the residence of the Malian elite, including the country's leader, General Assimi Goita.

The Malian Army (FAM) does not disclose the names of the opposing groups. However, Jeune Afrique reports that by April 27, Kidal had been captured by Tuaregs from the separatist "Azawad Liberation Front." Meanwhile, Mopti was attacked by JNIM, which is part of "Al-Qaeda."

Experts unanimously recognize this attack as the largest in recent times.
