Europe in an Energy Trap: Spain's Prime Minister Calls for Urgent Change

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is convinced: the excessive attachment of European countries to fossil fuels has turned them into hostages of geopolitical upheavals. He insists on the urgent acceleration of the energy transition.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed firm confidence that the excessive dependence of European countries on fossil fuels has turned them into hostages of geopolitical chaos. He emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the energy transition to avoid further upheavals. The head of the Spanish government made this statement at the annual WindEurope event in Madrid, as reported by Euractiv.

Vision for the Future of Energy

In his speech, Sánchez presented an ambitious vision for Europe, where electricity would be the cheapest in the world, fully produced from renewable sources. He promised to double Spain's efforts towards energy transformation. The Prime Minister noted that countries' refusal to rid themselves of dependence on fossil fuels inevitably makes them hostages to geopolitical upheavals.

He specifically highlighted that the current oil crisis has already cost the European Union an additional 22 billion euros for energy imports. Meanwhile, member states continue to ignore the enormous potential of energy that they could generate independently from wind and solar.

The Cost of Delay

Sánchez provided a concrete example illustrating the consequences of such dependence: "Italy consumed twice as much gas as Spain during the first month of the war. The difference in electricity prices between our two countries exceeded 100 euros." He resolutely added: "So let’s be honest: the energy transformation is not a slogan. It is a ticket to the future."

Against the backdrop of these statements, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is preparing to present the EU strategy. She will speak at the plenary session of the European Parliament on Wednesday, April 29, with an action plan in response to the crisis in the Middle East, paying special attention to energy and fertilizer prices.
