Tense Movement in the Strait of Hormuz: Sanctioned Tankers and the Yacht of a Russian Tycoon

The Strait of Hormuz has once again found itself in the spotlight of the world's media, as an unusual gathering of vessels was recorded there. Among them are several tankers under strict U.S. sanctions, as well as a luxury superyacht owned by one of the richest entrepreneurs in Russia.

According to fresh analytical data, at least two vessels under international sanctions passed through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz on the night of last Saturday. This waterway, known for its intense traffic, has once again attracted attention due to the unusual composition of the passing ships.

One of these vessels was the tanker Ocean Jet, which is under U.S. sanctions. It is suspected of actively facilitating the financing of covert supplies of Iranian drones, raising serious concerns in the international community.

Another sanctioned vessel spotted in the strait was the oil tanker Lumina Ocean, flying the flag of Curaçao. This ship has been under restrictions since December of last year and is considered by experts to be part of Iran's so-called "shadow fleet."

Luxury Under Sanctions: The Yacht Nord

Among other maritime objects observed in this area, the impressive yacht Nord stood out. It left the port of Dubai and passed through the strait, taking a route south of Larak Island.

This 142-meter superyacht belongs to billionaire Alexey Mordashov. He is the owner of the Russian vertically integrated steel and mining company Severstal.

Mr. Mordashov's net worth is estimated at around 37 billion U.S. dollars, making him one of the richest entrepreneurs in Russia. He confidently tops the list of Russian billionaires.

The yacht Nord was built in Germany at the famous Lürssen shipyard and was delivered to its owner in 2021. However, after sanctions were imposed against Alexey Mordashov in 2022, the vessel was forced to change its registration to Russian.

In 2023, the luxury vessel returned to Vladivostok, ending a long absence from the region. Its appearance in the Strait of Hormuz once again drew attention to its owner.
