Iran proposed to the US to unblock the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, postponing negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program to a later stage, reports the American online publication Axios, citing informed sources, as stated by LETA referencing DW.
Diplomacy has reached a deadlock, and there is no consensus among Iran's leadership regarding the possibility of concessions on the nuclear program, the publication states.
"Iran's proposal would circumvent this issue on the path to a quicker agreement," notes Axios.
"However, lifting the blockade of the [Strait of Hormuz] and ending the war would deprive US President Donald Trump of leverage in any further negotiations aimed at having Iran move its stockpile of enriched uranium out of the country and cease its enrichment," the publication states.
According to American officials, Trump plans to hold a meeting on Iran with his national security and foreign policy team on Monday.
The meeting will discuss the stalled negotiations and possible next steps, one source told Axios.
According to the Lebanon-based channel Al Mayadeen, Iran has proposed to the US to divide the negotiations into three stages.
The first stage would involve reaching an agreement to end the war and provide guarantees to Iran and Lebanon.
The second stage would include issues related to the management of the Strait of Hormuz, while the third would focus on Iran's nuclear program.
As reported by Al Mayadeen, Tehran refuses to discuss the latter point until an agreement is reached on the first two.
In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Trump indicated that he intends to continue the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which keeps Iranian oil exports blocked, hoping that this will compel Tehran to make concessions in the coming weeks.
