Explosive Threat: Zakopane Implements Strict Ban on Gas Cylinders in High-Rises

Residents of Polish Zakopane have received strict warnings: the use and storage of gas cylinders is now categorically prohibited in buildings over four floors. Find out why this decision was made and what consequences await violators.

A housing cooperative in Zakopane has sent detailed written notifications to its residents, reminding them of the strict rules and restrictions regarding the use of gas in Poland. These measures are designed to ensure safety and prevent potentially catastrophic incidents.

Why is Propane-Butane So Dangerous?

The Polish publication WNP emphasizes that propane-butane is significantly heavier than air. In the event of the slightest leak, this gas accumulates at floor level and in the lowest points of a building, such as basements, creating an extremely explosive concentration.

Such a situation can lead to a powerful explosion or a devastating fire with unpredictable and very serious consequences. This is why a complete ban on the storage and use of gas cylinders has been implemented in buildings with more than four floors.

Additional Restrictions and Alternatives

According to the decree of the Minister of Infrastructure of Poland, it is strictly prohibited to use liquefied gas and gas from a centralized network simultaneously in the same building. This rule has serious practical implications for residents.

In practice, this means that if a multi-story building (over four floors) lacks a gas installation, residents are deprived of the opportunity to use gas in any form. In such cases, only electric appliances, such as electric stoves, induction cookers, and electric ovens, are permitted for cooking.

Responsibility for Violations

The cooperative from Zakopane emphasizes that any owner or user of a premises who ignores the established rules bears serious responsibility. Violators face civil and criminal liability for any threats, damages, and possible accidents that arise.

Additionally, such individuals must be prepared for sudden inspections by the fire department or the district building inspection authority. These inspections are aimed at ensuring strict compliance with safety regulations.

Expert Opinion on Safety

It has been previously reported that a gas cylinder can pose a huge danger when misused, leading to tragedies. Safety expert Denis Mikhaylenko categorically states: "It is absolutely forbidden to install household gas cylinders in apartments, even despite heating problems, because there have been cases of fatalities from cylinder explosions or carbon monoxide poisoning."
