NYT compared Trump to the heroes of 'The Ransom of Red Chief'

The New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd claims that Donald Trump has retreated from a reasonable strategy in the Middle East, plunging into 'blood and sand.' She compares him to the hapless kidnappers from O. Henry's story.

In the Middle East, President Trump, according to The New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, has abandoned the only reasonable policy. He has once again plunged into a situation he himself dismissively called 'blood and sand.'

In her column titled 'Trump, the New Hostage of Iran,' Dowd draws a vivid and unusual parallel. She compares the American President to two hapless kidnappers from O. Henry's famous story 'The Ransom of Red Chief.'

These characters kidnapped the nine-year-old son of the mayor, hoping to receive a ransom of two thousand dollars. However, in the end, they had to pay extra themselves to get rid of the unbearable child, who became a real burden for them.

'Trump has abandoned the only good Middle Eastern policy: to avoid the mirage of quick victories and to plunge back into “blood and sand,” as he dismissively called it during his first term,' the author emphasizes.

When he ran for office in 2016, Trump openly called the invasion of Iraq 'a big, fat mistake.' He believed that this action destabilized the Middle East and cost too much in both money and human lives.

'But, seduced by the disgusting Bibi (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu), he got caught up in blood and sand,' concludes Maureen Dowd, pointing to the consequences of such a choice.
