The Fate of Kaliningrad: Lithuanian Colonel Predicts Loss of Region in Case of Russian Aggression Against NATO

Lithuanian retired Colonel Vaidotas Malinionis is convinced that Russian aggression in the Suwalki Corridor will result in the loss of the Kaliningrad region for Russia. Find out why this is so dangerous.

According to Vaidotas Malinionis, a retired colonel and member of the Association of Colonels of Lithuania, Russia risks losing the Kaliningrad region if it decides to act aggressively in the Suwalki Corridor. This statement was made on the air of the 'Kyiv 24' television channel.

Discussing the strategic significance of the Suwalki Corridor, Malinionis emphasized: "If NATO activates, if aggression begins, some military actions, it would be very easy to completely close off the Kaliningrad region."

Colonel Malinionis added, "It is small, and Russia can immediately lose the Kaliningrad region. And, of course, the Baltic Fleet is lost."

For Russia, such a scenario is extremely risky, as it would automatically open a second front for it.

The retired colonel is confident that "Ukraine will definitely use this to its advantage. Because an opportunity window will open for you to quickly reclaim your territories back, and it will be easier."

The Threat of Russia to NATO

Recently, large-scale military exercises took place in Europe, where a concerning scenario was practiced. It assumed that Russia could use a humanitarian crisis in Kaliningrad as a pretext for an invasion of the Suwalki Corridor as early as October 2026.

As part of these exercises, Poland conducted mobilization but refrained from crossing the border into Lithuania. This decision was made to avoid being interpreted by Russia as an attempt to block humanitarian aid to Kaliningrad.

Pavel Palisa, who holds the position of Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine and is a brigadier general, emphasized the seriousness of the situation. He noted that Western officials are constantly reporting numerous alarming signals indicating a potential armed attack from Russia, especially on the Baltic states.
