A 56-Year-Old Man Diagnosed with Dementia: His Wife Reveals the Symptoms They Missed

Janet never imagined that one day she would become not a loving wife, but a full-time caregiver for her husband.

John Green was only 56 years old when his wife Janet was forced to take on the care of her ailing husband. She shared what symptoms had indicated that something was clearly wrong with John just a few months prior.

Early Signs

As Janet recalls, it all began in 2018. At first, John became forgetful: he forgot about meetings, struggled at work, and could not use the computer properly.

However, John's condition worsened day by day. At one point, he had to leave his government job. The man could no longer manage driving a car.

It turned out that Green had Alzheimer's disease. The news of the diagnosis helped his family understand the reasons behind the father's strange behavior. At the same time, the doctors' verdict marked the beginning of a new life.

"Dementia is not selective. It can strike anyone at any age," notes Janet.

Difficult Decision

Janet and John have three children. When the family patriarch was diagnosed, the youngest, Evie, was only 14 years old. Her older brother and sister soon moved out to live separately, and Evie had to help her mother care for their father.

The girl admits that this was very difficult for her. She felt that because of her father's illness, she had to grow up too soon. Moreover, before the diagnosis, she was very close to John — and it was hard for her to accept that their relationship had changed so much.

"I was a real daddy's girl. He was one of my best friends," recalls Evie.

It was hard for her to come to terms with the fact that her beloved father had become frail.

"I felt intense anger. I remember thinking, 'Why am I cooking for my father? Why isn’t he cooking for me?' As his condition changed, I experienced unexpected feelings: anger, disappointment, even bouts of hatred. I tried to avoid him. It’s hard to admit, but it’s true," explains the girl.

Her mother admits that nothing can prepare you for how difficult it can be to care for someone with dementia. John's character changed due to the disease, and his behavior became unpredictable. Janet found it hard to realize that she was now more of a caregiver than a wife.

The Green family tried to maintain a positive attitude and enjoy the moments when John would become himself again. However, the man's condition continued to deteriorate. In 2025, the Greens made the difficult decision to move John to a nursing home.

Janet still feels guilty about this. But it was hard for her to see how her husband's personality faded more each day.

Janet and Evie sought help from a charity organization. The women try to focus on creating shared pleasant memories with John, the Daily Mail reports.
