Division in the European Union: Macron and Merz Debate the Future of the Strait of Hormuz

The German Chancellor does not oppose U.S. participation in the mission to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz, but the French President seeks to exclude 'hawkish' countries, including America, Israel, and Iran, proposing exclusively peaceful solutions.

Germany expresses its readiness for a joint mission with the United States in the Strait of Hormuz, while France proposes a completely different approach. Paris firmly insists on excluding so-called 'hawkish countries' from control over this strategically important waterway. President Macron includes the United States, Israel, and Iran among these countries.

French President Emmanuel Macron is actively promoting the idea of exclusively 'peaceful' measures to restore safe navigation. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to reports from The Telegraph, intends to discuss with the United States their participation in the planned patrol mission.

In the debates about creating a naval coalition to ensure the security of the passage, Friedrich Merz emphasizes the importance of dialogue with the United States. He believes it is necessary to discuss the involvement of American armed forces in this potential mission. However, Emmanuel Macron continues to push his agenda, seeking to remove the United States, Israel, and Iran from control over the strait.

The French leader has openly stated plans to form a 'coalition of the willing.' The goal of this initiative is to send military ships and vessels for demining in the Strait of Hormuz under joint British-French command.

Skepticism of Officials and American Influence

Western officials, who are aware of the details of the upcoming negotiations between Macron and Merz, do not have high hopes for the development of a concrete plan. They rather believe that these meetings are intended to appease Donald Trump. The former U.S. president has repeatedly criticized NATO and European partners for their reluctance to join his Middle Eastern military campaign.

Commenting on the idea of a German-American mission, Merz stated at a press conference in Berlin: "There are good arguments in favor of this." The publication notes that German officials are traditionally cautious in military matters without coordination with the American side. In contrast, France shows a much greater willingness to pursue an independent path, without looking to Washington.

Demands of the Élysée Palace and International Discussions

A representative of the Élysée Palace emphasized that it is extremely important to achieve certain commitments. Iran is required to guarantee non-aggression against vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States is expected to promise not to block the passage of any ships.

Earlier, it became known about the plans of the United Kingdom and France to hold a summit to discuss the creation of naval forces. The goal of these forces should be to ensure freedom of navigation through the critically important Strait of Hormuz. The situation has escalated after Iran renewed threats to close the strait.
