Radical changes in Hungary's policy towards Ukraine are expected - Latvian expert

Following the defeat of the party of Hungary's current Prime Minister Viktor Orban, 'Fidesz', in the parliamentary elections, radical changes in Hungary's position on issues concerning Ukraine are expected, stated Sandis Schrader, a researcher at the Latvian Institute of International Affairs, in an interview with the program '900 seconds' on TV3.

"I think this will be one of the areas that Hungary will change — relations with Brussels, relations with Ukraine, with all the countries that supported Ukraine. I think we can expect the most radical changes here," noted the expert.

At the same time, there are currently no loud priorities in domestic politics put forward by the new political elite.

"We can expect a gradual change of administration related to corruption issues, which led to the suspension of funding from European Union funds. [...] I don’t think the new political elite should strive too hard for radical changes. I believe that Hungary has now been given a mandate for a long transformation, so that the country can return to the path that was lost 16 years ago," commented Schrader.

It was previously reported that preliminary results of the vote count show that in the parliamentary elections in Hungary held on Sunday, the opposition conservative party 'Tisa' led by Peter Madjar is confidently in the lead.
