Official Chisinau stated that "Russia has violated the fundamental principles."
Moldova has announced its readiness to join the 'Coalition of the Resolute,' President Maia Sandu stated after a meeting of the National Security Council.
Sandu was asked to comment on the statement by French President Emmanuel Macron, who welcomed Moldova's decision to join the 'Coalition of the Resolute' to assist Ukraine. The president clarified that Moldova has only expressed its readiness to join for now.
"Moldova has expressed its readiness to participate in this 'Coalition of the Resolute.' I want to remind you that we are already providing support to Ukraine by training sapper units. And this is precisely what we can do and what we have offered if the members of the 'Coalition of the Resolute' decide to accept our country’s participation," Sandu said.
She emphasized that participation in the coalition does not contradict the Constitution of Moldova.
"It is important that we are also part of these efforts. As I have already said, our specialists can conduct training and participate in demining if the war in Ukraine ends," the president added.
Sandu also reported that Moldova's request still needs to be considered by other coalition members.
Recall that recently Moldova took a definitive step to exit the CIS. The procedure was initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, noting that Russia has violated the fundamental principles of this association, and that this step is part of Moldova's Euro-integration course.
"The denunciation of the fundamental agreements of the CIS does not mean and does not provide for the termination of Moldova's participation in other agreements concluded within the framework of the Commonwealth that benefit our citizens and the national economy. In relations with CIS countries, Moldova will continue to apply agreements, primarily in the trade and economic sphere – for example, on the free trade area – as long as they meet the economic interests of the country," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted.
They added that this decision will not affect the free movement of Moldovan citizens in CIS countries, as in most cases this is regulated by existing bilateral agreements.
In early February, the government of Moldova decided to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine amid the challenging energy situation due to massive attacks by the Russian Federation.
