Heavy nighttime rains flooded the roads of Dubai, leaving cars in water and disrupting the commute; authorities warn of new storms and flight delays in the UAE.
The United Arab Emirates was once again hit by torrential rains on Friday night, flooding roads across Dubai and forcing police, emergency water pumping crews, and tow trucks to take to the streets before dawn.
In several areas, water covered intersections, access roads, and underground interchanges, causing some drivers to become trapped while others abandoned their cars. The flooding disrupted the morning commute in one of the busiest cities in the Persian Gulf and once again highlighted the vulnerability of the low-lying urban highways when intense rains hit the desert metropolis.
Authorities across the United Arab Emirates issued multiple storm warnings this week as an area of unstable weather spreads across the country ahead of the summer heat. Reports on Friday indicated that rain and thunderstorm activity may persist in some areas of the UAE, and Dubai airport authorities warned passengers of possible flight delays.
According to scientists and meteorologists, such episodes remain unusual; however, it is increasingly difficult to view them as isolated incidents: short but intense downpours are increasingly testing drainage systems, transportation infrastructure, and emergency services' capabilities.
