NYT: Netanyahu convinced Trump that the collapse of the Iranian authorities during the operation is possible.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convinced U.S. President Donald Trump before the onset of military action that the collapse of the Iranian authorities during a military operation was possible. This was reported by The New York Times (NYT).
"In the lead-up to the war, Netanyahu used the optimism of the Israeli national intelligence agency 'Mossad' regarding the possibility of an Iranian uprising to convince Trump that the collapse of the Iranian government was a realistic goal," the article states.
"Mossad" had previously suggested to Netanyahu to ignite a mass uprising in Iran, which, in light of the beginning of the operation by Israel and the U.S., was supposed to lead to a regime change in the Islamic Republic.
Many senior American officials, as well as intelligence analysts from the Israel Defense Forces, were skeptical of the plan. American military officials tried to explain to Trump that Iranians would not take to the streets while the U.S. and Israel were striking the country, and intelligence personnel assessed the likelihood of a civil war and regime change resulting from a mass uprising as low.
Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that agents from the Israeli intelligence service 'Mossad' were calling Iranian commanders and personally demanding that they "start an uprising" in the Islamic Republic, threatening them with retribution.
