The US has postponed the summit with China indefinitely due to the war with Iran — the meeting will not take place until the conflict is resolved, reports Politico.
According to sources from the publication, the administration decided not to conduct major negotiations with Beijing amid military actions, in order not to make possible concessions in a crisis situation.
Contacts for preparing the meeting had already been underway, but they are now completely on hold with no new deadlines.
Discussions on key topics — trade, technology, and strategic competition — are effectively frozen.
The administration acknowledges that if the conflict drags on, it will push back dialogue with China for a long time and affect the overall format of relations between the countries.
Earlier, Trump had already stated that his visit to China, scheduled for April, has been postponed by about a month.
It is believed that by the time of the visit, Trump planned to present Xi with the conquered Iran as a trump card. However, it seems that the White House already understands that by the end of March, the "Iranian issue" will not be resolved.
And the postponement of Trump's visit to China at this point is the most obvious evidence that the "special operation in Iran did not go as planned."
