King of Spain Felipe VI publicly acknowledged that numerous abuses occurred during the Spanish conquest of Mexico, sparking a new wave of discussions about the country's colonial past.
Speaking at the National Archaeological Museum of Madrid at an exhibition dedicated to indigenous women, the monarch noted that the events of that era "cannot evoke a sense of pride" from the perspective of modern criteria.
Present at the event, the Mexican ambassador Kirino Ordas emphasized the importance of acknowledging historical mistakes, which has been voiced for the first time by the Spanish monarch and may influence relations between Madrid and Mexico City.
