A powerful snowstorm is raging in the northeastern United States, causing millions of people to stay home, paralyzing transportation, and closing schools and many businesses, reports LETA citing AP.
Meteorologists reported that this is the strongest snowstorm in the region in the last ten years. In some places, more than 60 centimeters of snow has fallen, and in Rhode Island, the snow cover has exceeded 90 centimeters.
Due to the blizzard, the United Nations headquarters in New York City was closed on Monday.
States of emergency have been declared in New York City, Philadelphia, and other cities, as well as in several states.
Public transportation is not operating in certain areas.
According to the flight tracking website FlightAware, more than 5,600 flights were canceled in the U.S. on Monday, and about 2,000 on Tuesday.
On Monday evening, more than 430,000 households and businesses were without power, according to data from PowerOutage.
Meanwhile, meteorologists predict that another powerful snowstorm will hit the northeastern United States by the end of the week.
