The fighters may be in the region for modernization or testing.
Russia has deployed fifth-generation Su-57 fighters to the Far East, practically at the border with China. This was reported on Tuesday by Peter Suciu, a columnist for the American magazine The National Interest.
The journalist analyzed satellite images that appeared online, capturing Russian combat vehicles spotted at one of the bases in the eastern part of the country. He linked this deployment to the Russian military leadership's desire to move aviation out of the potential strike range of Ukrainian armed forces.
"Apparently, Russia has relocated most of its Su-57 fighters to a remote airbase in the Far East — as far geographically as possible from the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine," Suciu believes.
He also suggested that the fighters might be in the region for modernization or testing.
"Another possible explanation is that Russia seeks to protect its valuable Su-57s from Ukraine," the journalist concluded.
The Russian Su-57 is among the five fifth-generation fighters currently in service worldwide. Fighters of this class are characterized by stealth and high flight performance.
