Prime Minister Kristen Mihal assured on Thursday that despite President Alar Karis's statements about achieving peace in Ukraine, Estonia's foreign policy on this issue has not changed.
According to Mihal, it is in Estonia's interest to have a unified and strong European foreign policy aimed at protecting Ukraine and putting pressure on Russia. "This is what we have advocated for," emphasized Mihal.
Mihal stated that Estonia's foreign policy supports Ukraine and does not make concessions to Russia, nor does it consider separate negotiations with Putin and legitimizing his participation in them appropriate. On the contrary, it is aimed at putting pressure on Russia.
"We are among the largest supporters of Ukraine, and we should be proud of that. This is not a competition, but a principled issue," said Mihal.
He confirmed that the European Union is at the negotiating table with Ukraine, and sometimes the United States joins them. "In the case of Russia, only pressure works. If you cut off the oxygen to the dictator, then you can move forward," continued Mihal.
"Do we concede in principle to territorial integrity and that borders cannot be changed by force? The answer is again 'no.' This applies both to the case of Greenland and equally to Ukraine," said Mihal.
According to Mihal, all talks about Ukraine potentially giving up part of its land to Russia are unfounded, as you never know what that 'piece' will ultimately turn into. "So yes, Estonia's foreign policy has not changed. And I do not see any contradiction in these statements between the president and the government. I see a contradiction with the foreign policy course of the Estonian state, which is certainly broader than just the government—it includes the parliament and the same fundamental values that the Estonian state embodies. We fundamentally support Ukraine and stand by its side," said Mihal, adding that the statements made cannot be called successful.
"I have a very good relationship with the president, so I am sad that I have to say such things at all," added the Prime Minister.
President Alar Karis stated in an interview with the American television channel NBC News that at some point Ukraine will have to consider the issue of temporarily ceding territory to achieve peace, but noted that such a decision can only be made by Ukraine itself, as reported by Postimees.
Recall that the day before, Alar Karis and Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina stated that the European Union needs to sit down with Russia at the negotiating table.
