Russia has withdrawn its military personnel from Al-Qamishli airport in northeastern Syria, which was previously located in the territory of the Kurdish autonomy, reports Reuters, as cited by Meduza.
The withdrawal of soldiers and weapons began last week. It is expected that some of the military will be transferred to the Russian airbase Khmeimim in western Syria, while some will return to Russia, sources told Reuters on Monday.
According to a source in the Syrian security forces, military equipment and heavy weaponry have been transferred from Al-Qamishli to Khmeimim over the past two days.
A Reuters journalist noted that on Monday, Russian flags were still flying at the Al-Qamishli airport, and two planes with Russian identification marks were on the runway.
At the same time, the publication Al Monitor released a video from the base showing abandoned property after the military's departure, as well as Russian flags waving above the communication tower.
